I was talking with someone the other day about Oracle Parallel Server (OPS) and Real Application Clusters. I got to thinking about what percentage of RAC deployments have been done by folks that had prior OPS experience. I wondered if the number was really small?
I remember during the summer of 2000 I was working on the Oracle Disk Manager library at Veritas using a pre-release version of Oracle called Oracle 8.2. That was the code that became the Oracle9i product. The clustered database in Oracle 8.2 was still being called Oracle Parallel Server since that was before the name Real Application Clusters hit the street. Oh well, that is just a little walk down memory lane.

Same here – OPS (8172) on HP-UX, RAC (9205) on Linux, soon to be 10.2.0.3 on 64-bit Linux. Also, OPS (7.3) in a former life.

Started with OPS with version 7.0, now RAC on 9.2.0.6

RAC:
9.2, 10.1 (non-prod), 10.2
BTW, yu’ve missed Linux as the platform for OPS

Good point about the fact that I left out Linux as one of the Poll options for an OPS platform. I hope nobody actually did that in production though…eeek…or am I mistaken and 8i OPS on a Linux 2.2 kernel was really cool stuff
Only saw this poll on OPS with your recent RASUI and RAC post.
Here’s my OPS background with varied clients.
One client’s 8.1.7 OPS upgraded to 10gR2 RAC only last 2005.
That began production with OPS 7.3.4 about 11 years ago.
OPS:
AIX 3.2 with HACMP 3.1 – 7.3.4
AIX 4.1 with HACMP 4.1 – 8.1.5, 8.1.6, 8.1.7
RAC:
AIX 4.1 with HACMP 4.1 – 9.2.0.2
RHEL2 AS – 9.2.0.4, 10.1.0.3, 10.1.0.5
RHEL4(64-bit) AS – 10.2.0.2, 10.2.0.3
OPS, 6.2 in VMS!
Then RAC testing in 9i with Linux.
Trying to redo it all on 10g but no time…
No OPS. Just RAC 10g R1 and R2.

We have had 0 experience with any kind of parallel/clustered platform until a few months ago (10gR2 RAC)

Definitely, there was nothing special in the kernel, nor was that “port” targeted as a production (IMHO).
However that special realease allowed to simulate some OPS bevarior features without necessity to bye or borrow an expensive hardware (shared storage, etc). Now there are another possibilities – VMWare cluster, etc
So its role was predominately an educational one, and a basis for the basic tests (of inter-instance communication influence on the application).
